Euthanasia

When the time comes to say goodbye, it is a difficult one for families to face. The passing of a beloved pet creates a huge void in your life. As pet owners and lovers ourselves, we know how it feels to lose a friend and faithful companion.

Unfortunately, the time will come in almost every pet owner’s life when they are faced with the decision to ensure their beloved pet no longer suffers. As veterinarians, we will help guide you through your decision process and ensure that you understand all the options available for your pet. We want to ensure that you feel confident with your final decision and what is best for your pet.

The process involves an intravenous injection. The procedure is very quick and painless and performed with the utmost respect and compassion for you and your pet.

Euthanasia & Creamtion

In some circumstances, clients will request that the veterinarian come to their home to perform the euthanasia. We are able to provide this service to the clientele of Point Grey Veterinary Hospital. It is essential that we have a standing relationship and history with the patient to ensure euthanasia is the appropriate measure to be taken. These special arrangements can be made if there is advance notice and there is a veterinarian and a technician available who can travel to your home. There is an additional fee for this service.

Whether the procedure is performed in our clinic or your home, our staff will do their best to create a calm and peaceful environment for you to say goodbye to your pet. When the procedure is completed, the veterinarian and technician will ensure respectful handling of your pet’s remains.

Cremation

After you have lost a beloved pet, we ensure that the cremation process is dealt with in a compassionate, caring, and timely manner. Most cities and municipalities have strict bylaws regarding the disposal of a pet’s remains. Because there are chemicals involved in the euthanasia process, burying a pet on your property will create an environmental and health hazard to others. We work closely with the companies that provide cremation services (www.untilwemeetagain.ca) and we are pleased with the respect and care that they take in managing this process.

Private Cremation

A private cremation is an option for those who wish to retain the remains of their loved ones. This service includes the company taking possession of your pet from us, the cremation process and the delivery of the ashes back to the clinic for you or a family member to pick up. A private cremation means that your pet is individually placed into the cremation chamber and then cremated. This ensures that only your pet’s ashes are collected after the cremation process. The ashes are carefully sealed in a plastic bag and interred into a cedar chest and returned to the clinic for you.

Communal Cremation

Communal cremation is offered for those owners who prefer not to retain their pet’s remains. This option offers the highest level of dignity at a more modest cost than private cremation.

Paw Print Keepsake

Should you wish to have a permanent keepsake of your pet, we can arrange for an impression of your pet’s paw print to be cast in a ceramic plaque in a colour of your choice. Please feel free to discuss your requirements with our staff.
